I liked the course and found it usefull. The direction was a bit missing on the beginning but ended up good. I think we spend too much time checking the assigments during classes. I would have used some of that time to give some hands on intro about the tools used. After some small lesson during the class it is allways faster to take a deepdive on the internet for completing assignments.
— Participant 3, 2020-05-21It was really great participating in the course, I learnt the fundamentals of security and even applied some of them. Exploring the dark web was interesting but scary at the same time. Tero was vey knowlegeable in ICT security in all levels and even if we had some hands-on exercises, he assured that the steps are very clear for us to follow and offered his best to help whenever we are stuck.
Hey Tero! The course was very good, I'd say one of the best of master courses available. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in ICT security but is not afraid of doing some hands on tasks. It felt the course didn't know where it was going at start but I think on the third class the classes started to get better and developed nicely towards the end of the course, also the general feedback started to get better.
By the way commentero.terokarvinen.com is not https!
I learnt many new things during this course, which are, unfortunately, only for the benefit of my own personal interest and which I cannot use at work at least for time being. On the other words, since this was a masters course, I would have expected more managerial perspective to the subject instead of many hands on and even nice to know things. But thanks and have a great summer.
— Sanna Haakana, 2020-05-18Very nice and excellent course! Lot's of topics traversed and I would have enjoyed further gatherings beyond the scope of the course also. It's very nice to see relevant topics being discussed and brought up during the course. All the topics were related to working life and it was great to have presenters from third parties who really had interesting subjects to go through.
In my opinion just the right amount of high level business topics and the hands on stuff.
5/5 would take the course again!
So much to learn in so little time. I would say that a very time-consuming course when you don’t handle these topics at your daily tasks. But still I liked it very much, especially blockchain got my attention. Maybe more business cases would have been nice to discuss. Or if you could team-up with a person who is more technical in beginning of the course and then share thoughts and learn together.
— Jussi S., 2020-05-18There was sadly too little time to address some topics as thoroughly as they would have deserved.
A lot of interesting topics and the assignments were challenging but fun.
There were a lot of interesting presentations during the last lesson, but we only had 5 minutes time for each. Most of them were directly from working life and things the presenters were familiar with. A lot of different security tools and processes were presented and I would have liked to hear more about them. Maybe some of the things like SIEM, SOC and Fluentd would have been good topics for a whole lesson.
I felt the Security Strategy subject very important and maybe that point of view could somehow be present on each class. The cryptocurrency lecture and the videomaterial were excellent and could easily fill a course of their own.
Could this course be broken down to three separate courses? Security Strategy and business tools, handson stuff (web goat) and Blockchain and cryptocurrencies.
I must say that I really enjoyed the course! When thinking about my expectations (to learn more about fundamentals of security AND to put your hands to the dirt) for the course, those were easily achieved. TOR was completely new for me and it was very interesting to deep dive into that world also. I experienced many moments of success when completing some of the WebGoat tasks. Kind of a found my small hacker inside me after hours of WebGoating. Also cryptography was very useful for the future. Overall I learnt a lot and not just from the teacher but also from the course peers. So thank you all for sharing your expertise!
— Jari Sivén, 2020-05-18The course was nice. I would have liked this more if A) there would have been more business stuff (i.e. like Niko's presentation) *or* B) a deeper dive into some specific subjects instead of general go throughs
I wasn't particularly interested in the anonymity/cryptocurrency topics. However going through technical details of Tor specifications was surprisingly fascinating derailing I had chance to do thanks to the assignment!
Thank you for the course. I liked the way it was held as a discussion format. Security is such a wide topic and im sure we all have a lot of questions related to it. For me personally it was beneficial and I learned a lot of new things. Now I'm going to find some time to go through WebGoat, CryptoPals and other great material that was mentioned during the course.
— Eero Penttinen, 2020-05-18Thank you Tero. It was difficult course for me but also the most interesting. You should add more hands-on presentations in the lessons. Other more technical student or your should demonstrate the tools more to us business persons.
— Johanna Juvonen, 2020-05-18I did submit the HH feedback already, so these are really going to be 2 different feedbacks. Even though I must repeat, that this course has at times made me very anxious for I've felt that I'm not doing well enough and the general feedback on the lectures has been quite straight forward Finnish. But I must say, that especially the last class we had was super nice, even that I was super nervous about my presentation and had some technical issues, I did enjoy it and listening to other people's presentations as well. After all, the course did teach me new things and give a good overview on the security topics.
